Terry Platz
Communications and Outreach Assistant
Terry Platz, Communications and Outreach Assistant, helps facilitate promotion of Beacon Institute news and events to its constituency. Working alongside Beacon Institute’s Chief Communications Officer Kathleen Hickey and Public Outreach Coordinator Michael Heintzman to inform the public is the thrust of her role, creating daily postings for BIRE’s Facebook page, writing website calendar updates, regional online calendar listings and event registrations. Terry also assists in the planning and execution of special events at the Institute’s Center for Environmental Innovation and Education (CEIE) at Denning’s Point.
Identifying the need for assistance in the maintenance of the gardens and special events at CEIE, Terry has established a dedicated corps of Beacon Institute volunteers. “Horticultural Therapy” sessions allow those interested in joining the Beacon Institute community of volunteers to learn about the indigenous plantings and gardening in general, while helping sustain the beautiful natural face surrounding the CEIE building.
“River Yoga” is another program concept Terry has organized, calling on the Vikasa Yoga Studio to provide beginner yoga classes on Sunday mornings at CEIE.
Before joining Beacon Institute, Terry spent several years working as Event Coordinator for the music festival Mamapalooza, establishing the annual day-long event in Westchester County at Kensico Dam. She was instrumental in the creation of its non-profit arm, the Motherhood Foundation. Contributing to her knowledge of promotion as well, is her nearly ten years as member of the musical group MotherLode Trio, which has performed on network television on shows such as “Good Morning America” and Rachael Ray.
Terry graduated from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor of Music degree and went on to become a studio singer for commercials, records and films for a number of years hence.
